– This is the first part of the Book of Lost Tales. A mariner named Eriol travels westward across the ocean, and comes to the fairy island of Tol Eressëa, where the Elves dwell. Here he finds 'the Cottage of Lost Play', where Vairë and Lindo dwell. He lives here as their guest, and every evening after dinner, a story from the elder days is told. Eriol thus learns the true history of the Elves, a history which he is the first of mankind to hear.
The tales that Eriol hears are the first form of the myths and legends which later came to be called 'The Silmarillion'. These tales are the beginning of Tolkien's entire conception of Middle-earth, of the sun and the moon, elves, dwarves, balrogs, men, and of Valinor.
The themes of the stories are very ambitious. Tolkien wanted to write 'a mythology for England', and the Book of Lost Tales was his first attempt. What he has written is exceedingly great he has really managed to create the world in a new way, inhabit it with new creatures, and make mythological gods. Tolkien has, by all means, succeeded.
