Hun gjennomgår en utrolig utvikling gjennom boken - fra å være en sjenert og naiv jente til å bli hun en sterk og selvsikker kvinne. Hennes syn på både hennes nye hjemland England og "gamlelandet" Bangladesh er både underholdende og tankevekkende, og karakteren har skarpe og morsommme observasjoner av autoriteter og samfunn. Monica Ali skriver med en humor og varme som gjør at man både blir utrolig glad i karakterene, samt at man kan le av de mer usympatiske og tåpelige sidene deres. Historien i seg selv er gripende nok, men blir ytterlige beriket av de godt skildrede karakterene, og disse to elementene gjør at dette er en bok som tåler å leses flere ganger!
