– Redcoat is a book that takes place in America during the Revolutionary War. The main character, Sam, who is a Redcoat, is struggling between his loyalty to his country and his love for a rebel woman, which is what costed his brother his life. His confusion turns former allies into mortal enemies and leads him to question his own intentions. Bernard Cornwell has done a really great job in transforming what most people would think to be just an ordinary war into a story of people who face many of the same problems that can be found in our modern society. The characters face death and fear, love and hate, hope and doubt, along with many other emotionss.
The characters are molded into the time period for which they represent. All in all I think this was a better book than I had originally thought.

– I am pleased that Redcoat was my first Cornwell novel. I enjoyed the story well enough, but what really caught my attention is that Cornwell told such a detailed story of the assault at Paoli's Tavern and the Battle of Germantown, that I could practically smell the smoke of the cannon and hear the rattle of musketry. It was also nice to read a story about the American Revolution told from a different perspective.
Cornwell deserves full marks for this effort. If half of what I hear about the "Sharpe's" series is true, I am in for quite a treat.
