– Rent fortellerteknisk kan denne boken være litt av en utfordring. Det tar litt tid å komme i gang med boken, og dersom du tar en pause på et par dager er det vanskelig å plukke opp tråden akkurat der du stoppet sist. Språket kan også virke ekskluderende på en del lesere, og det er synd. Dette er nemlig en meget, meget god historie.
Dersom du lar Hardy få tak på deg går det som en lek. Det spennende med denne boken er at akkurat når du tror at du har funnet ut av hvordan det hele henger sammen, så tar Hardy enda et krumspring. På 400 sider skifter du oppfatning mer enn én gang om de forskjellige karakterene; som allvitende forteller er Hardy tidvis genial når han doserer ut den mørke historien.
Hardy er vanskelig å få tak på, men når du først kommer i gang er du hektet. Jeg har ennå til gode å lese en bok som engasjerer like mye rundt klassiske temaer som svik, løgn og kjærlighet. Da får man helder holde ut Hardys tidvis tunge språk og tilgi forfatteren at han ble født for så lenge siden.
