– Disse 24 'sangene' utgjør det vi kjenner som Homers Iliaden. Hvem denne Homer er strides de lærde om, men jeg har i alle fall som de fleste andre lært å se han for meg som en blind gammel mann. Han skal ha ført denne episke fortellingen i bok, og her er episk brukt i sin rette forstand. Boken handler om krigen mellom grekerne og Troja, som bunner ut i et trekantdrama. Det er nok av action, og det er nok av rørende psykologiske skildringer. At dette ble skrevet for så lenge siden slutter aldri å forbløffe meg. Rammehistorien er drevet frem av hevn og hat, og boken er i det hele tatt gjennomgående intens. I tillegg blander de greske gudene seg inn, og den guddommelige dimensjonen gir assosiasjoner til fantasyromaner. Anbefales om man har lyst på en spennende utfordring. For en liten utfordring er det å lese på versemål, og ikke minst å holde styr på alle navnene.

Boken er det tidligste litterære verket i Europa, og er skrevet av den angivelig blinde Homer, men om det er snakk om en mann eller forfattere i det heletatt er det vel strid om. Sentralt i europakunnskapen inneholder denne boken helter som Akilles, Agamemnon og Hektor. Mennene sloss for sin udødeliggjøring igjennom å bli historisk. Store slag utspilles, og i kulissene driver gudene med sin hensynsløse manipulering. Det er imponerende at et så gammelt verk kan være så underholdene i dag, men konflikter har nå alltid vært noe vi har lest om med spenning, og det finnes lite annet enn konflikter i denne boken. Det må i så fall Kjærligheten og Skjønnheten med stor bokstav. Krigerne elsker hverandre, og de elsker sine koner. Et grandiost, og faktisk med aldri så lite spennende, verk som absolutt er lesbart.
