Om forfatteren

Maeve Binchy was born in Dublin, and went to school at the Holy Child Convent in Killiney. She took a history degree at UCD and taught in various girls' schools, writing travel articles in the long summer holidays. In 1969 she joined the Irish Times and for many years she was based in London writing humorous columns from all over the world. She is the author of five collections of short stories as well as twelve novels including Circle of Friends, The Copper Beech, Tara Road, Evening Class and The Glass Lake. Maeve Binchy died on 30 July 2012. She is survived by her husband, the writer Gordon Snell.

– 'Firefly summer' er kanskje den av Meave Binchys bøker som jeg har likt minst. Faktisk til de grader at jeg enkelte steder hadde problemer med å lese videre, og for meg var den egentlig en ganske intetsigende og litt irriterende bok. Binchy brukte litt for mye plass på detaljer, og avsluttet på en sånn måte at man får inntrykk av at hun kanskje var lei av å skrive, og bare ville bli ferdig med det. I tillegg var det en del 'unødvendige' hendelser som ble viet masse plass, men som ikke var med på å utvikle historien videre. Er du ikke Binchy fan, tror jeg du gjør best i å styre unna, og er du det, kan du med fordel skumme gjennom der du kjeder deg uten at du mister noe viktig.

– Enten liker man Maeve Binchys fortellerstil eller så skygger man langt unna. Hun forteller aldri én historie eller konsentrerer seg om én hovedperson; hun forteller et samfunn. I "Firefly Summer" dras vi inn i Mountfern-samfunnet gjennom Kate og John Ryan, pubeierne, og deres fire mangfoldige barn - særlig tvillingene Michael og Dara. Den stille irske landsbygda blir aldri den samme etter at den rike irsk-amerikaneren Patrick O'Neill flytter til landsbyen for å fullføre sin drøm - et hotell der forfedrene levde. Vi følger et knippe mennesker hvis liv endres radikalt pga. Patricks drøm. Alle historiene veves inn i hverandre, ett menneskes handlinger får konsekvenser for mange andres. Noen vil synes dette er langdrygt, men andre av oss liker grundige, snille beretninger. Binchy skriver med kjærlighet og varme og kjennskap til de samfunnene hun tar for seg. For meg gir bredden i historiene hennes troverdighet. Men det krever tålmodighet og kjærlighet til den lange og detaljerte og gode historien å lese nesten 800 sider. For dem som orker: Gled dere!
