I nåtida planlegger Clarissa et selskap i Greenwich Village for sin eldste kjærlighet, en poet som er døende av AIDS og i 1949 i Los Angeles forbereder den gravide Laura Brown ektemannens bursdag, men hun klarer ikke å stoppe å lese Woolf. Om forfatteren
Michael Cunningham was raised in Los Angeles and now lives in New York. His first novel, A Home at the End of the World, was published in 1990 and his second, Flesh and Blood, in 1995. His work has been published in the New Yorker.
