– Pietro Moroni er en helt vanlig elleveåring som vokser opp i en søvnig småby i Italia. Verden rundt ham er forøvrig en liten tanke uvanlig, noe som skal sette sitt preg på ham for resten av livet. Pietro er skoleflink og nesten usynlig i klassen, men han er venn med Gloria, som er rikmannsdatter. Dette gjør at han til dels får gå i fred for noen av skolens plageånder. Graziano Bigli har rundet førti, og kommer fra samme sted som Pietro, men har klart å skaffe seg et navn i den store verden. Det er i allefall det han forsøker å innbille seg selv, inntil den dagen han forteller sin mor at han skal gifte seg, og blir dumpet av modellkjæresten. Det er disse to som er hovedpersonene i denne boka, som inneholder et ganske herlig (og til tider heslig) persongalleri. Forfatteren legger ingenting imellom, og skildrer begges liv med brutal ærlighet. Jeg syns ikke den var morsom, men den var vel verd å lese, siden det dukker opp overraskelser hele veien. Du kan formelig kjenne sola steike og sanden blåse mens du leser. Absolutt lesverdig.
