– This was the first book I read by Gabriel García Márquez, and I have now read it over and over again, enjoying it just as much every time! At its simplest, this book tells the story of a young man, Florentino Ariza, who falls spectacularly in love with a young woman, named Fermina Daza, and when he is rejected by her proceeds to spend the rest of his life pining and obsessing over her, never really moving on at all. Fermina Daza then goes on to marry another man and it is only with the death of her husband in old age that Florentino Ariza finally gets the second chance he waited decades for. The title of the book comes from the regular outbreaks and the constant background threat of cholera in the city, but it also becomes apparent that the author views the illness as a metaphor for love! This is a classic, beautiful and heart warming story, I cannot recommend it enough! The writing is breath taking, the characters fascinating and the plot very engaging! A must read book!
