– This is Jeanette Wintersons debut novel which caused some controversy but became so popular that it was later made into a TV series. The novel is not automatically autobiographical, but we follow a girl named Jeanette through her upbringing in a British industrial town where she was raised by her deeply religious parents who adopted her when she was only a baby. Things are not easy for Jeanette who discovers that she falls in love with women and not men and we follow her struggles to find her own identity. This book also has some lovely stories-within-the-tale which is part of Wintersonss way of writing and which makes it even more interesting to read.
