– I denne boka møter vi folket fra Ember rett etter at de har kommet opp fra den døende byen sin. De er overvelmet av det som møter dem der, og når de kommer til en liten landsby på overflaten, fremstår de som totalt uvitende for folket som allerede bor der. Landsbyen de har kommet til heter Sparks, og det er en av de mest velstående landsbyene i området. Allikevel skal det vise seg at Sparks har vanskelig for å dele godene sine med folket fra Ember, spesielt etter enkelte provoserende hendelser. i hjertet av begivelsene står også denne gangen Lina og Doon. Som i The City of Ember er det viktige tema som tas opp i denne boken. Selv om tonen kanskje er med belærende denne gangen er det fremdeles spennende lesing.
