'By 1848 London had become a city of many refugees, many from radical uprisings or movements in Germany and France. Here Lattek describes the community of Germans that formed in London as the firestorms of 1848 flared, starting with the various organizations they forms strictly for themselves and then for others in the early years, followed by the growth of the Communist League and its demise only a few years later, a period of apathy following the collapse of several projects, and the rising perception that this was not exile but a colony.
