The collapse of the Soviet Union provides economist Howard Sherman the opportunity to re-evaluate Marxism as an alternative to conventional pro-capitalist perspectives. Arguing that Soviet Marxism distorted Marxian thought, Sherman acknowledges that Marxism must move beyond its traditional Soviet formulation. What is needed, he writes, is a new, critical Marxism that is integral to a radical political economy-a Marxism that sees society as an organic whole, dependent upon an integrated set of relationships.

Sherman ønsker med denne boka å stake ut kursen for marxisme som ideologi for fremtiden. Han tar opp veldig mange temaer, på en lett og oversiktelig måte. De behandles fra flere sider, og tidligere dogmatiske retninger i marxisistisk tenkning får kritikk. Som oppslagsbok i marxisme fungerer boka etter min mening svært godt. Den blir ikke for dogmatisk, samtidig som den ikke vanner ut marxismen for mye.
Kritikk mot boka må være at den kunne vært lengre, med mer utfyllende drøftinger av problemer, men som oppslags og innføringsverk er den perfekt. Skal du kjøpe en innføringsbok i marxistisk tenking vil jeg klart anbefale denne.
